On December 19, 2022, the National Customs Automation Program (NCAP) Global Business Identifier (GBI) Test was initiated to sample and determine the appropriate replacement of the Manufacturer’s Identification (MID). The test is now extended for an additional 3 years through February 23, 2027, and is expanded to allow for all countries of origin and all commodities, although the entry type restriction remains. It is further noted that this timeline remains subject to extension or early termination.
A party may obtain its own Global Business Identifiers at the following websites:
Data Universal Number System (DUNS) 9-digit number at Dun & Bradstreet Support Page – Submit Case (dnb.com)
3-digit Global Location Number (GLN) at Customs and Border Protection (CBP) (gs1us.org)
20-digit Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) – Get an LEI: Find LEI Issuing Organizations – LEI – GLEIF
US Customs & Border Protection will continue to analyze the effectiveness of these universal global business identifiers to address the issues caused by the MID in addition to using these identifiers to enhance supply chain traceability and visibility.
The full text of the extension and program details can be found at 2024-02788.pdf (govinfo.gov). Importers who wish to participate in the test, should contact [email protected].
