Section 232 Investigation on Timber and Lumber Initiated

President Trump has ordered an investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act to assess the national security impact of timber and lumber imports. This review will cover all forms of timber, lumber, and their derivative products to determine their impact on domestic industry and economic security.

The Secretary of Commerce will assess domestic demand, the ability of U.S. producers to meet that demand, and the role of foreign supply chains, particularly those of major exporters. The investigation will also consider additional factors including the effects of foreign government subsidies, trade practices, the feasibility of increasing domestic production to reduce reliance on imports, and whether current trade policies sufficiently protect national security.

The Secretary of Commerce will consult with relevant federal agencies to analyze these factors and determine whether policy measures such as tariffs, quotas, or incentives to increase domestic production are necessary to protect national security. The final report outlining findings and recommendations is due to the President by November 2025.
